    Frequently asked questions

What does a Florida school grade mean?

Each year the Florida Department of Education grades public schools from A to F based on state test results in reading, math, science and social studies, student progress and, in middle and high school, accelerated coursework and graduation rates. A is the top grade.

How many schools are rated A in Miami?

    In 2026, 298 of Miami-Dade's 473 graded schools (63%) and 177 of Broward's 287 (62%) earned an A.

What is the difference between a district school and a charter school?

Both are public and free. District schools are run by the school district, and you are zoned to one by your address. Charter schools are independently run, require an application and hold a lottery if there are more applicants than seats. In 2026, 69% of charters and 60% of district schools earned an A.

Can I choose my children's school?

Partly. You are zoned to a district school by your address, but Florida lets you request a seat at other public schools with space available, and magnet programs have their own admissions. Charter schools are applied to directly. Deadlines usually open months before the school year.

How do I know which school I am zoned for?

It depends on your exact address. Check the school locator of Miami-Dade County Public Schools or Broward County Public Schools before renting or buying.

    Are private schools included?

No. Official grades only exist for public schools, including charters. Private schools are not graded by the state.

    Method note

We use the official 2026 grades published by the Florida Department of Education for the Miami-Dade (13) and Broward (06) districts, with the 2025 grade to show the trend and the percentage of points earned. Each school's address, ZIP code and grades offered come from the National Center for Education Statistics school directory (NCES, 2023-2024 school year), and its location from NCES 2024-2025. The city or community is the Census place where the school is located or, if it is outside one, the city in its mailing address. We do not include ungraded schools, such as adult centers, special programs or new schools. Always check with the district before deciding.
